Can I legally drive this minibus?

Most commercial businesses normally operate minibuses as its core business activity and does so for personal or commercial profit, known as "hire and reward". These businesses can be found under the "coach hire" or "private hire" section of the yellow pages or advertised to the general public.

However, there are also other commercial businesses who operate minibuses as minor part of their business activity, for example a privately owned nursing home, who charge their residents a fee, which indirectly includes the use of the minibus. For these and similar examples, the driver of the minibus would need to hold a PCV D or D1 category on their licence.

Other businesses which may fall into this category are:

  • Nursery & Child care
  • Private schools (unless operated under a charitable status)
  • Hotels
  • Businesses operating Courtesy buses to customers

Question: Do you have a PCV D or D1 category on your licence,
obtained by passing a separate driving test ?
